In March 2026, my stepfather Todd passed away.
A member of his family chose a direct cremation. No service. No obituary. No notice in the paper. They loved him. They also couldn't afford to spend $8,000 the family didn't have. They did the best they could with what was in front of them.
But it sat with me. Todd had a whole life. He deserved more than a quiet disappearance.
So I built him a memorial: toddkibbeymemorial.com. When it was finished, the family saw it and cried — not because the cremation was wrong, but because, finally, there was a place where Todd existed again.
Then I built one for my father.
Paul Clayton Artman III was born in Toledo in 1946 and died on April 23, 1990, at forty-three. He met my mother when he was seventeen. He worked in other men's metal shops until he opened his own, Artman Tool & Die. For thirty-six years, almost none of that was written down anywhere his grandchildren could find it.
Building his memorial gave everyone in the family a place to share the parts of him they still carry. Each of us only holds a piece. Put those pieces somewhere together and you get a far more complete picture of his life — and of the impact he still has on every one of us.
